PFAS webinars on soil, water, products and human exposure

Sidebar Image

PFAS is a wide group of compounds for which more knowledge is needed and this applies to both environmental and health risks. In this context development and application of new analytical methodology become important, not at least to provide input for a more comprehensive assessment. Eurofins in collaboration with NIRAS and Örebro University (Oru) invite you to two webinars with PFAS theme. The presentations are linked to the research carried out at Man-Technology-Environment (MTM) research centre at Oru and the research profile EnForce where Eurofins and NIRAS take part.

First webinar - Monday 1st June

In the first webinar Mon 1 June (10-11.30 am) Patrick van Hees (Eurofins/Oru) will talk about PFAS precursors, novel and ultrashort PFAS in AFFF contaminated soil and soil leachates. Precursors are known/unknown compounds that can degrade to perfluorinated acids, and can for example be studied using the TOP (total oxidizable precursors) assay. Novel PFAS are substances that have replaced “classic” PFAS such as PFOS, or compounds that have been largely overlooked. Ultrashort PFAS have three or less carbon atoms and have not been investigated to any larger extent in soil or after TOP oxidation. Marko Filipovic (NIRAS) will present a study on the atmospheric deposition of PFAS in Stockholm and the contribution of this pathway to the Lake Mälaren as well as smaller lakes in the area. Altogether 47 PFAS and EOF (extractable organic fluorine) were determined. Results showed that PFCA such as PFOA and PFHxA were dominant but also that many “simple” precursors could be found, but still more than 80% of the EOF was unidentified. PFAS concentrations in atmospheric deposition reflected those found in smaller lakes.

Agenda

Agenda Mon 1 June, 10-11.30 am:

Precursors, novel and ultrashort PFAS in contaminated soil and leachates – Patrick van Hees (Eurofins/Oru)

Is atmospheric deposition an important pathway for PFAS to Lake Mälaren and lakes in Stockholm city? – Marko Filipovic (NIRAS)

Second webinar - Monday 8 June

The second webinar on Mon 8 June (10-11.45 am) with four shorter talks will largely focus on ongoing MTM/Enforce projects on both analysis and exposure. Felicia Fredriksson (Oru) will present a Swe EPA funded project on PFAS composition of old and new Scotchgard products and the amounts of these compounds to be found in municipal WWTP sludge. An analytical project on the performance of TOP assay, not at least for novel PFAS ethers, will be discussed by Pontus Larsson (Oru). Rudolf Aro (Oru) will talk about EOF in Swedish blood samples. EOF measurements give the opportunity to monitor the “overall” PFAS burden including precursors and degradation products. The fourth presentation will be by Marko Filipovic (NIRAS) on PFAS in water and sediments of Lake Mälaren.

Agenda

Agenda Mon 8 June, 10-11.45 am:

  • Extractable organofluorine in Swedish blood - Rudolf Aro (Oru)
  • Occurrence of Scotchgard products in Swedish environment - Felicia Fredriksson (Oru)
  • Total oxidizable precursor assay: applications and limitations - Pontus Larsson (Oru)
  • PFAS in water columns and sediment cores from Lake Mälaren within Stockholm City - Marko Filipovic (NIRAS)
